Joe Cada, a college dropout-turned-professional gambler, just emerged victorious as the youngest ever World Series of Poker champion at 21 years old.
Cada beat 6,500 other players to finally emerge with the $8.55 million top prize in the WSOP’s grandest event in Las Vegas. Cada’s victory mirrors that of 22-year-old Peter Eastgate’s victory just last year.
Cada’s won the final hand over 46-year-old Darwin Moon in an all-in duel with a pair of nines against Moon’s queen and jack. The dealer uncovered two sevens, a two, an eight and a king for the hand, improving neither player’s standing, and giving Cada the title with a nine-pair over a queen-high.
Moon will receive $5.2 million as the championship runner-up. The top nine finishers of the contest were each guaranteed at least $1.26 million.
