Nate Montana, son of ex-Notre Dame football player Joe Montana, was one of the 11 Fighting Irish athletes that were arrested for underage drinking at a weekend party near the university campus.
The police received a call Friday night about a fight and rushed to the scene. They saw the party and arrested a total of 44 people, said Bill Redman, assistant chief of the St. Joseph County Police department.
Montana and Tim Abromaitis were the most recognizable among the lot. Montana was a backup, while Abromaitis was the number two leading scorer in the team last season, with an average of 16.1 points per game.
The other athletes that were taken into police custody were cornerback Lo Wood, linebacker Steve Filer, receivers Tai-ler Jones and Robby Toma, offensive linemen Tate Nichols and Chris Watt, kicker Nick Tausch, incoming hockey goalie Steven Summerhays, and incoming freshman point guard Eric Atkins.
Many of them have already been released on a $150 bond. They are all required to appear on court on July 30.
Notre Dame football coach Brian Kelly, basketball coach Mike Brey and sports information director Bernie Cafarelli have been informed of the arrests. Kelly said, “If there is any team-related discipline to be issued, it would be handled internally.”
