David Chapman, who killed John Lennon, is up for parole for the sixth time on August 9.
Twenty-years after his life sentence 55-year-old Chapman had time and again been denied.
Prior to his first bid in 2000, Lennon’s widow, Yoko Ono wrote the Parole Board opposing his release. Even State Senator Michael Nozzolio, Chairman of the Senate Crime Victims, Crime and Correction Committee, wrote “It is the responsibility of the New York State Parole Board to ensure that public safety is protected from the release of dangerous criminals like Mark David Chapman.”
On Chapman’s first parole hearing, which lasted 50 minutes, Chapman expressed regret on what Mrs. Lennon had gone through and gave an assurance that he isn’t a danger anymore.
Whilst he had a clean record while in prison authorities are stating that since Chapman is a high profile criminal he had been in isolation the entire time. Thus his clean record isn’t an indication of his behavior when he is let out as a free man.
Every two years Chapman had been up for parole and arguments opposing his release never changed. Only the time of his parole hearing changes. They keep getting shorter and shorter.
