Latin America’s first ever same-sex marriage has been ordered by a judge to postpone until the issue can be discussed further.
The same-sex marriage between Alex Freyre and Jose Maria di Bello is scheduled to be held in Argentina on Tuesday, and has been ruled as legal by another judge earlier in November 10. However, Judge Marta Gomez Alsina has filed an injunction that suggests that the November 10 ruling by Judge Gabriela Seijas be reviewed and discussed further.
Freyre and di Bello, however, are still continuing with their preparations, arguing that the ruling that their union was legal cannot be overturned by Gomez Alsina, because she is just a trial-level judge.
Seijas ruled in November 10 that the ban on same-sex marriages were illegal and unconstitutional, reasoning that every individual must be regarded in equality. Seijas granted the Freyre and di Bello permission to claim their marriage license if they so choose to claim it.
Latin American countries, being predominantly Catholic, are largely sensitive to similar issues, but has recently given more attention to gay rights.
