Ken Mehlman, who worked as campaign manager for President George W. Bush in 2004, has come out of the closet.

He told Atlantic magazine in an interview, “It’s taken me 43 years to get comfortable with this part of my life.”

Mehlman revealed that his family, friends and colleagues “have been wonderfully supportive.”

Some years back, rumors about Mehlman’s sexuality went around, but he denied all the buzz, saying they were all false.

He and his aides did their best back then to hide his real sexual orientation by setting him up with dates with women and taking photos of him together with them.

Mehlman, who was also the ex-chairman of the Republican National Committee, said he wishes that the gay community will become more accepted.  He admitted that if he came out as gay earlier, he “could have worked against [the Federal Marriage Amendment]” and “reached out to the gay community in the way I reached out to African Americans.”
