LeBron James has publicly announced his intention to petition that no other NBA player should wear the jersey number 23 – in honor of NBA legend Michael Jordan.
James said that he was planning on dropping his current number 23 and switch back to number 6 after the season, the jersey number James used in the 2008 Olympics in Beijing.
“I just think what Michael Jordan has done for the game has to be recognized some way soon,” James said in a statement. “He can’t get the logo , and if he can’t, something has to be done,” referencing NBA Hall of Famer Jerry West‘s silhouette on the NBA logo.
Under current NBA league rules, James has to file a formal request to the NBA league office by March 5 if he plans to change his number and maintain his contract with the Cavs. If he was planning on defecting to another team by next season, he would be free to pick any number currently available at that time.
“If you see 23, you think about Michael Jordan,” continued James. “He did so much, it has to be recognized, and not just by putting him in the Hall of Fame.”
