Millions of people were shaken awake in Southern California just before dawn Tuesday, when a 4.4-magnitude earthquake hit east of Los Angeles.
The earthquake was centered about 10 miles (16 kilometers) east of downtown Los Angeles, and occurred sometime around 4:00 a.m., according to the U.S. Geological Survey. The earthquake was strong enough to be felt, but no reports of damage, power outages or injuries have been logged.
“It was a shake, but not bad,” shares Sgt. Jacqueline Sanchez of the earthquake. “Our inmates slept through it and we had a few calls, but not as many as you would think.”
California, which lies on the Pacific rim, is the latest occurrence of a series of earthquakes that seem to be trending along the area. Tokyo also suffered a 6.6-magnitude earthquake just last Sunday, just days after another earthquake on one of its southernmost islands.
