A powerful magnitude 7 quake hit the Caribbean region at around four in the afternoon (local time), with Haiti receiving its strongest impact.
Reports said that Haiti’s capital, Port-Au-Prince, experienced heavy damages including a hospital that had totally collapsed. The earthquake left the impoverished nation in much chaos.
Local damage brought about by the quake affected two million poor people, and several agencies have already started preparing for the worst case scenario that may happen in the near future. Authorities are on the lookout for a possible tsunami that may hit the area, the United States Geological Survey said.
According to the USGS website, the earthquake was between the 7 and 7.3 magnitude range and struck 18.580°N, 72.540°W.
A Tsunami watch is being implemented in the other affected coastal areas including Cuba, Dominican Republic and The Bahamas.
