Michael Enright, a 21-year-old film student at the School of Visual Arts, was arrested Tuesday after stabbing a Muslim taxi driver in Manhattan, New York.
According to the police, the hate crime happened around 6:15 in the evening, when cab driver Ahmed H. Sharif, drove Enright from East 24th Street to East 42nd Street.
Sharif said Enright engaged him in a conversation upon getting in the cab, mostly asking questions about his life – is he a Muslim, how long has he lived in the US, does he fast during Ramadan, etc.
Later on, Enright suddenly stopped talking and just “started cursing and screaming.” He then reached through an opening on the cab’s protective partition and slashed Sharif’s throat.
Luckily, Sharif was able to climb out of his cab and call 911. A police officer patrolling nearby came to the rescue and found Enright highly intoxicated.
The 43-year-old cab driver was rushed to Bellevue.
Enright was charged by the State Supreme Court in New York City on Wednesday for attempted murder as a hate crime, aggravated harassment, assault, and criminal possession of a weapon.
