It seems that Filipino fighter Manny Pacquiao might be looking at a bout with undefeated Venezuelan Edwin Valero, should there still be problems in securing a fight with Floyd Mayweather Jr, at least according to Freddie Roach.
Roach, Pacquiao’s esteemed trainer, expresses that Valero would also make for a spectacular fight for Manny Pacquiao, arguably considered to be the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world.
“I’ve been watching him a little bit. I know he’s a big puncher. He’s a southpaw and does pose some difficulties,” shares Roach of Valero. “He’s better than just a guy who could punch but I think that’s the best marketable fight out there for us.”
While Roach calls Valero to be the ‘number one contender’ for Pacquiao right now, he also shared that he’d personally prefer a rematch between Manny Pacquiao and Juan Miguel Marquez. The duo’s two previous fights had been very close: the first one in 2004 ending in a draw, and the second one in 2007 ending in a split decision favoring Pacquiao.
“Personally, that’s the fight I want. Nacho [Beristain] is a good trainer and we’re competitive, and I’d love for Manny to knock him [Marquez] out,” Roach said.
Manny Pacquiao just recently won against Ghana warrior Joshua Clottey last Saturday in a unanimous decision.
