Floyd Mayweather Jr.’s camp says that they’re not ready to throw in the towel on this one fight.
Filipino fighter Manny Pacquiao’s camp, led by Top Rank main man Bob Arum, has stated that they are ‘moving on’ from the scheduled WBO welterweight title bout between Pacquiao and Mayweather this March because of persistently failing negotiations about drug test procedures.
However, Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer, which handles Mayweather, said that they are more than willing to strike a compromise for Pacquiao’s camp to allow for a final blood test 14 days before the bout, as opposed to previous demands of perfectly random testing – where a blood test can suddenly occur just days or even hours before the fight. But that, they say, has been turned down as well.
“If they don’t want to do the fight, they should have said it a long time ago and not messed around,” says Schaefer in a statement. “I am hopeful that this fight can still happen. No matter what, Floyd Mayweather will fight at the MGM Grand on March 13. I hope the man across that ring will be Manny Pacquiao.”
The March 13 fight was put in jeopardy when Mayweather demanded that Pacquiao subject himself to Olympic-style dope testing, which Arum flatly declined, saying that getting blood drawn anytime 30 days before a fight will have negative effects on Pacquiao, which could eventually make his fight performance falter. Pacquiao, however, has agreed to undergo the dope testing even immediately after the fight for purposes of proving that he had not been under any performance-enhancing influence, but just not within the 30 days before the fight.
