Can’t get enough of Big Mac and Twister Fries?
As a long time partner of the Olympics, McDonald’s is set to build its biggest fast food chain at the Olympic Park in London in time for the staging of the 2012 Olympics in the city.
Estimated to take up 3,000 square meters of land, the new McDonald’s restaurant will occupy two floors and is half as long as an American football field. It will have 1,500 seats and is one of four McDonald’s branches to open in the park.
McDonald’s will be hiring 470 employees to serve approximately 50,000 Big Macs, 100,000 portions of fries, and 30,000 milkshakes during the nearly month long duration of the Olympics. McDonald’s UK Vice President Steve Easterbrook revealed that 14 million meals will be served with one in five a McDonald’s meal.
Meanwhile, the London Olympics chiefs have belied claims that the new McDonald’s restaurant will be against its aim of promoting healthy and active lifestyle, which they have advocated since being chosen as hosts of the 2012 Olympics.
This will be the ninth straight Olympics that McDonald’s will serve as the official restaurant of the Games and will be the lone branded food retailer feeding the athletes. For the 2012 Olympics, McDonald’s will be getting the ingredients from nearly 17,500 British and Irish farms.
Built by top French designer Philippe Avanzi, the new restaurant will have brightly colored stools and chairs to bring about a vibrant and striking environment complete with contemporary designer graphics. It will also use recycled materials for the Games. After the Olympics, the kitchen and furniture will be recycled in other restaurants across the United Kingdom.
This plan of the London organizing committee was met by disapproval from several health groups saying that this contradicts their objective of getting more than two million Britons to practice an active lifestyle to battle obesity.
In response to the criticism, a spokeswoman of the company said that the meal they will be serving will suit into being active and healthy. They provide nutritional information on their traylines, website, and packaging to allow customers to make an informed choice.
McDonald’s has long been an official partner of the Olympics and it has an exclusive deal that will make it as the only branded restaurant during the Games.
