Dana Kirk, former head coach of the Memphis Tigers, died Monday evening at the Methodist University Hospital.
Kirk coached the Memphis State University Tigers men’s basketball team for 7 years, from 1979 to 1986. He brought the team to the final four in 1985, but an investigation was done due to several NCAA violations. The Tigers’ 1985 season was forfeited, and they were put under probation for a couple of years.
In September 1986, Kirk was fired as MSU Tigers coach after he was charged on 11 counts of mail fraud, tax evasion, obstruction of justice and filing a false income tax return. He was in federal prison in Montgomery, Alabama for four months.
When he got out, he had a radio talk show stint and released his autobiography called “Simply Amazing.”
The cause of death is still unclear.
