Merlin Olsen, football star and actor, dies of cancer

Pro Football Hall of Famer Merlin Olsen, who was one of the Los Angeles Ram’s Fearsome Foursome, has died on Thursday in Duarte, California. He was 69.

His brother Orrin announced his death and said that the athlete had been suffering from mesothelioma, an uncommon type of cancer.

Olsen, a 6-foot-5 270-pound native of Logan, was considered one of the best tackles the NFL has ever had. He also worked as a football commentator for NBC. His acting credits included “Little House on the Prairie” on NBC and “Father Murphy.”

“I’m sure that I take out many of my personal aggressions on the field, but I don’t play football for that reason. My roughness and aggressiveness at certain times are prompted by my desire to be a better football player. I don’t enjoy contact,” he once said in “The First 50 Years: The Story of the National Football League.”
