Perhaps only the second shocker of Michael Douglas to the public, with the first being his marriage to Catherine Zeta-Jones who is 25 years his junior, Michael Douglas announced on The Late Show with David Letterman that his throat cancer is already on stage four.

As with the true Douglas spirit he said he is confident of beating the disease with doctors predicting 80% of chance of success.

He had been seeing doctors early on in the summer due to a persistent ear and throat pain but doctors couldn’t find anything until August.  This is what makes his wife furious.

Now, Douglas is undergoing radiation and chemotherapy five days a week, every three weeks to destroy the walnut-sized tumor at the base of his tongue.

“I am head and neck, nothing’s gone down.”

Douglas is referring to one of the two types of throat cancer which may be either head and neck cancer or esophageal cancer.  His is strongly associated with tobacco smoking, alcohol consumption and excessive consumption of processed and red meats.

“The hardest part is seeing (Michael) fatigued, because he is never tired,” says his wife of ten years, fellow award winning actress, Zeta-Jones.
