U.S. First Lady Michelle Obama’s campaign against childhood obesity stepped up after taking a personal turn by paying more attention to the body fat of her own daughters, whose body mass indexes (BMI) were said to be rising.
“I didn’t really know what BMI was,” Obama said. “I certainly didn’t know that even a small increase in BMI can have serious consequences for a child’s health.
She added that all parents should know their own and their children’s vital weight statistic.
President Barack Obama and the first lady are the parents of two girls, Malia, 12, and Sasha, 9.
The BM, which is considered to be a more reliable indicator of obesity than weight alone, takes height and weight into consideration when calculating body fat.
