Mike Rice, coach of Robert Morris University, is reportedly slated to become the next head coach of the Rutgers Scarlet Knights men’s basketball team.
41-year-old Rice led the Robert Morris Colonials to two successful NCAA tournament seasons, plus an NIT bid, with a remarkable 73-30 record. His team, which was no. 15 seeded, almost beat out Villanova, the no. 2 seeded team, in March. The Colonials lost in overtime.
Rice will replace Scarlet Knights coach Fred Hill, who filed his resignation last month. Hill coached the Scarlet Knights for four seasons, with a 47-77 record.
Other names that were considered for the coaching position were Rutgers alum and former 76ers coach Eddie Jordan, former New Mexico, St. John’s, and Manhattan coach Fran Fraschilla, and former coach of Boston College Al Skinner.
The terms of the deal between Rice and Rutgers have not been revealed.
