Moderate earthquake rattles Puerto Rico

A magnitude 5.7 quake struck western Puerto Rico Sunday morning, the United States Geological Survey said.

The earthquake reportedly shook the Caribbean island at 1:16 in the morning Puerto Rico time (or 5:16 am GMT) at a depth of 110 kilometers or 68 miles. Its center was located at about 107 kilometers (67 miles) west of San Juan and 8 kilometers (5 miles) northeast of Mayaguez, Puerto Rico.

According to the West Coast and Alaska Tsunami Warning Center, it is not expecting a major tsunami to occur, but it is possible that coastal areas situated near the epicenter may experience local tsunamis brought about underwater landslides.

There were no reports of any severe damages or casualties, but some areas experienced power outages, according to Moca Police Department officer Guidiberto Torres Valle.
