A Mormon bishop was shot to death on Sunday, after a church service at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Visalia, California.
The bishop was 42-year-old Clay Sannar, who was shot in his office.
Authorities said about twenty minutes after the shooting, they received a call from somebody who claimed to be the gunman and told them where he was going. They responded and intercepted him, firing shots at each other, until the suspect was killed. He was taken to the Kaweah Delta Medical Center and was pronounced dead there. Fortunately, not one of the policemen got injured during the gunfight.
According to church members, the gunman was not a member of their church. But recent reports said the gunman, named Kenneth Ward, 47, was a former member of the church who resigned in 2004. He reportedly “felt wronged by a leader in 1988.”
Colleen Mestas, chief of the Visalia police department, said, “We have several detectives out actively investigating this so we can come up with answers, especially for the family.”
