Owen Van Natta, MySpace‘s new CEO, made his first major course of action by cutting back on staff by approximately 30% last Tuesday. This seems to be in response to MySpace’s continual traffic decline as rival site Facebook continues to grow even stronger.

“Simply put, our staffing levels were bloated and hindered our ability to be an efficient and nimble team-oriented company,” Van Natta was reported as saying.

Van Natta came into MySpace as its CEO last April. He was vice president of operations for Facebook, and CEO of online music startup Playlist Inc. in the past.

MySpace has been experiencing increased traffic over the long-term, with 123.3 million visitors in April 2009, as compared to last year’s 115.7 million in April 2008. This was in slight decline, however, from March 2009, with 125.7 million.

Facebook, on the other hand, logged 307.1 million hits in April 2009 alone, a relatively major increase from its April 2008 figure of 116.4 million uniques.

This was probably something that really needed to be done in order for that company to see what it really has and where they are in the social networking and web promotion world. With much fat stripped away they can take inventory and see what they have for a service for others out there and reinvent themselves every year.
