World number one tennis player Rafael Nadal scores another dominating victory over Roger Federer, 6-3, 6-2 in the semifinals of the Sony Ericsson Open in Key Biscayne, Florida.
The fans were anticipating a tightly contested match but that did not happen as the Spaniard easily won over the Swiss former number one. Nadal will meet second ranked player Novak Djokovic, a 6-3, 6-1 winner over American Mardy Fish, who became the top US tennis player with his victory over David Ferrer.
Nadal will be aiming to win his first title in Key Biscayne while the Serbian is looking to add another trophy to the title he won in 2007. A year ago, Djokovic’s main weakness was his serve. His service has not yet been broken in 40 service games in the tournament, erasing all the 15 break points he faced.
Federer is now 0-4 against both Nadal and Djokovic this year and is undefeated in 22 games against everyone else. During the match, he was in trouble early committing four unforced errors to lose serve and fall behind 2-1. He could not keep up with the velocity of Nadal’s ground strokes. The match ended in just 75 minutes when Federer netted a forehand.
In contrast, Nadal held his serve, converting on four of five break points committing only 10 unforced errors against the 31 of Federer. The top-ranked player now leads Federer 15-8 in their head to head matches. Against Djokovic, he is now 16-8 losing to the Serbian in Indian Wells a couple of weeks ago. So far, Djokovic has won three titles, including the Australian Open. He is now 23-0 this year, giving him the best record to start a year since Ivan Lendl went 25-0 in 1986.
In the women’s side, three time Grand Slam champion Maria Sharapova will aim to capture her first title in Key Biscayne and since May 2010 against the champion two years ago Victoria Azarenka. The Russian defeated Andrea Petkovic, 3-6, 6-0, 6-2. Azarenka, on the other hand, defeated Vera Zvonareva, 6-0, 6-3.
