Nexus One: Google shows off their newest plaything

Google has revealed their own player in the mobile smartphone industry.

The web has been abuzz about the Nexus One, Google’s own branded smartphone that they just unveiled during an invitation-only event in Google HQ at Mountain View. The sleek touchscreen phone was developed in cooperation with Taiwanese manufacturer HTC, and will be running on, surprise surprise, Google’s Android platform.

The Nexus One sports a 3.7-inch touchscreen and will be running on a 1GHz processor, backing on 512MB Flash memory using an SD card slot (expandable to 32GB). The internal camera will be able to take photos of up to 5 megapixels, and is equipped with a supporting LED flash.

Google says that the Nexus One will also be able to sense its environment light, allowing it to adjust the brightness of its screen to conserve energy. It’s also capable of using voice-recognition technology for all of its applications. GPS is also included right out of the box, along with noise cancellation technology.

The Nexus One will be available through Google’s website for the hefty price of $529, but goes down to $$179 with a binding contract to T-Mobile for two years.

Google plans to make the Nexus One available in Europe through Vodafone eventually, and also through Verizon in the U.S.
