Nokia preditcs 10% rise in handset industry volumes next year

Nokia Corporation, the world’s largest manufacturer of mobile phones, said on Wednesday that it expects the sales volume of mobile devices to increase by 10% in 2010.

During its investor day event in Espoo, Finland, the company announced that it will focus on improving its margins, leveling up its businesses, and endorsing the use of smart phones globally.

The Finnish handset maker is set to release new and improved touch-screen phones with revolutionary software to go up against iPhone, the technology that has made Apple, Inc the most profitable handset retailer in the world, according to Strategy Analytics.

From 42.3% the previous year, the smart-phone sales went down to 39.3% this quarter, while sales for Research In Motion Ltd’s Blackberry and Apple’s iPhone increased, according to market researcher Gartner Inc.

Nokia has introduced over 45 brand new cellular phone models this year, including the N900 handset and the X6 music phone.
