Governor David Paterson vows to continue fighting for same-sex marriage in the state of New Yorkafter the Senate snubbed a bill that would have legalized it.
The bill, supported by Paterson, was able to pass the State Assembly. However, eight of his fellow Democrats united with the rest of the Republicans which resulted to a 38-24 final Senate vote.
“It is always darkest before the dawn. As disappointed as we are today, let’s get up tomorrow and redouble our efforts,” Paterson said in a statement he made on Wednesday afternoon. “We are going to lay the foundation to make people feel comfortable to vote their conscience and not fear political backlash.”
Senator Ruben Diaz, a Democrat and a Bronx Pentecostal minister, said many religious leaders in New York are against the bill, and they want to preserve the “traditional values.”
New York would have been the sixth U.S. state to authorize same-sex marriage, joining Connecticut, Vermont, Massachusetts, Iowa and New Hampshire.
