Obama environmental adviser resigns due to controversy

Current controversies revolving around derogatory statements about the U.S. Government have forced the White House‘s “green jobs” adviser to quit.

The White House has announced Sunday morning that U.S. President Barack Obama‘s environmental adviser Van Jones has resigned from his post. Nancy Sutley, the Chair of the White House Council on Environmental Quality, has issued a statement expressing her gratitude for Jones’ work for the past six months.

Jones has been under public attack and scrutiny for uncovered statements by him relating back to the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. Jones’ name had cropped up in a public petition he signed six years ago, which argued that government officials should be scrutinized for allowing the 9/11 attacks to succeed.

Jones has also issued an apology for recorded comments from a public meeting in February, wherein he called Republicans condescending names for not completely supporting administration efforts.

“… opponents of reform have mounted a vicious smear campaign against me,” said Jones in his resignation statement. “They are using lies and distortions to distract and divide.”

Despite urges from “across the political spectrum” telling him to “stay and fight”, however, Jones says that he cannot “ask [his] colleagues to expend precious time and energy defending or explaining [his] past”.

“We need all hands on deck, fighting for the future,” Jones concludes.
