Obama, Hu Discuss Potential Iran Nuclear Sanctions

US President Barack Obama and Chinese President Hu Jintao met privately before the start of the 2010 Nuclear Security Summit in Washington, D.C. to discuss possible sanctions for Iran for its non-approval of the nuclear non-proliferation agreement.

Jeff Bader, National Security Council Senior Director for Asian Affairs, stated that China has shown deep concern about the Iranian Nuclear Program and they approve the idea of non-proliferation. This meeting is an effect of the belief of the United States and its allies that Iran is developing nuclear weapons.

However, the Iranian government has stated that they are only developing peaceful means of nuclear energy usage. Still, Obama and Hu have agreed after the meeting that Iran must stay true to its non-proliferation obligations. Both leaders have also instructed their delegates to work on possible sanctions for Iran if it does not follow non-proliferation.

Together with Great Britain, Germany, Russia, France and the United States, China is one of the P-5+1 nations that negotiated with Iran about the nuclear energy issue. With the Chinese joining ship, U.S Ambassador the United Nations Susan Rice stated that this is a welcome progress for the Chinese goverment is unwilling to bestow harsher sanctions against Iran that the other P-5+1 nations were seeking.
