Obama to limit the use of US nuclear weapons

US president Barack Obama shared on Monday that he’s currently working on new government policy aimed to control when and where the use of nuclear arms by the United States is permitted.

Obama said in an interview that he was changing the overall nuclear strategy of the country when it comes acceptable conditions for use, but he also said that there will be inlaid exceptions in the new policy for “outliers like Iran and North Korea“. Both of the stated countries have made motion to violate the treaty to stop nuclear proliferation.

Obama’s efforts are part of a broader plan to hopefully usher the world towards making nuclear weapons obsolete, a strategy in large contrast with his predecessors. However, the new strategy would still include various safety options, including a reconsideration of the use of nuclear weapons if the development of biological weapons have reached a level that would be significantly threatening for the country.

“We are going to want to make sure that we can continue to move towards less emphasis on nuclear weapons,” says Obama.

Obama will fly to Prague on Thursday to sign a new arms-control agreement with Russia. Additionally, a summit hosting 47 world leaders in Washington next week will aim to discuss nuclear security.
