The Los Angeles County coroner‘s office has officially declared that Michael Jackson had died due to homicide, specifically because of acute propofol intoxication.
The coroner’s statement enumerated various drugs that have been detected in Jackson’s body, including propofol, an anesthetic also known as Diprivan, and notorious for arguably being the public favorite pin-on substance attributing to Jackson’s demise. The statement identified propofol and Lorazepam to be the primary causes of Jackson’s death, with benzodiazepine listed as being a contributing factor.
Other substances noted included midazolam, diazepam, lidocaine and ephedrine.
The full toxicology report will remain on hold, however, due to the requests of the Los Angeles police, and of the Los Angeles Country District Attorney’s Office.
While no criminal charges have yet been filed, people familiar with the case have expressed speculations that charges against Jackson’s physician, Dr. Conrad Murray, is inevitable. Murray, however, has been identified by the Los Angeles Police Department as the primary target of its manslaughter investigation.
Murray, in an official statement to the police, attested that on the night of his death, Jackson had been demanding propofol due to his inability to sleep. According to an affidavit filed by Murray, he resisted Jackson’s demands and instead gave the singer doses Valium, lorazepam and midazolam.
However, when Jackson still could not sleep, Murray finally gave in and administered propofol over Jackson’s I.V. drip. The coroner’s report states that this, along with the other drugs that the singer had been given that night, had been enough to kill him.
