Oklahoma City flooding leaves dozens stranded

Dozens of commuters had no choice but to seek safety on rooftops and trees when Oklahoma City was struck with flash floods Monday.

Several boats were sent out to rescue the people, including a 17-year-old girl who was caught on tape trying really hard to stay up by holding on to tree branches. Unfortunately, her rescuers’ boat sank and they had to wait for another one to get them. “She was nervous, of course, but she was calm. For 17 years old, she was really calm. I just stood there and hugged the tree. We were all just hanging out there together,” one of the rescuers said.

They were also able to rescue a man who left his car on a submerged bridge and chose to wait for rescuers on a nearby tree. “The boat came through the floodwaters, and they grabbed him out of the tree and got him out of there. You couldn’t see the bridge at all. You couldn’t see his vehicle. It was completely overrun with water,” a witness said.

A state of emergency was declared Monday for all 59 counties in Oklahoma.
