Filipino fighter Manny Pacquiao is threatening to pin Floyd Mayweather Jr. with legal action because of unreasonable drug testing demands by the latter.
Pacquiao is scheduled to trade punches with Mayweather in a WBO title match in March of next year, in what is expected to be one of the highest-grossing boxing bouts recently, if not of all-time.
However, that is put in doubt when Mayweather demands that Pacquiao undergo Olympic-style blood testing within 30 days prior to their match. Pacquiao’s camp, led by promoter Bob Arum, declines their demands, saying that blood testing that close to the bout has a significant negative effect on the athlete. Arum adds that not only is it unacceptable, it’s also unnecessary, as Nevada law does not require such a stringent procedure done.
“Enough is enough. These people, Mayweather Sr, Jr, and Golden Boy Promotions, think it is a joke and a right to accuse someone wrongly of using steroids or other performance-enhancing drugs,” reads an official statement from Pacquiao’s personal web site. “I have tried to just brush it off as a mere pre-fight ploy but I think they have gone overboard.”
Pacquiao now claims that he has instructed Arum to bring in their lawyers to review the situation, saying that because of Mayweather’s demands, his reputation is being tarnished, with more and more people asking him whether or not he really cheated his success into the boxing world with performance-enhancing drugs.
“I maintain and assure everyone that I have not used any form or kind of steroids and that my way to the top is a result of hard work, hard work, hard work and a lot of blood spilled from my past battles in the ring, not outside of it,” Pacquiao continues. “I have no idea what steroids look like and my fear in God has kept me safe and victorious through all these years.”
Pacquiao has agreed to undergo blood testing before and after the March 13 fight, but just not 30 days before.
