John P. Murtha, the Pennsylvania’s longest-serving House member, has died yesterday due to complications acquired from a gallbladder surgery.
The 77-year-old was Vietnam War hero and was considered an influential figure in Pennsylvania’s congressional delegation.
President Barack Obama said in a statement, “His passion for service was born during his decorated career in the United States Marine Corps, and he went on to earn the distinction of being the first Vietnam War combat veteran elected to Congress. Jack’s tough-as-nails reputation carried over to Congress, where he became a respected voice on issues of national security.”
Pennsylvania Governor Edward Rendell said state flags all throughout their state are to be flown at half-staff until the burial.
Murtha is survived by his wife Joyce, daughter Donna, sons John and Patrick, and three grand kids.
