The “world’s most expensive artist” title went back to Pablo Picasso, after one of his artworks sold for $106.5 million at an auction on Tuesday.
Picasso’s 1932 painting, called “Nude, Green Leaves, and Bust,” smashed a world auction sale record made three months ago, as a telephone buyer called in to purchase his work for a record-breaking price.
Christie’s New York, the auction house, decided to keep the identity of the owner a secret. The bidding for this particular artwork lasted for nine minutes.
“Nude, Green Leaves, and Bust” features Picasso’s profile hovering over his mistress, Marie-Therese Walter, who is in a reclining position. It is painted in greens, blues and pinks, and is among the most valuable private collection of modern art in the United States.
