Playstation 3′s still down, Sony still tight on a fix

Thousands of Sony Playstation 3 owners have been experiencing problems with their units since Sunday – but one day later and Sony has yet to release a fix.

Complaints started pouring in Sunday when numerous Playstation 3 units started spewing connection errors while trying to establish a connection with the Playstation Network. Tech blog Ars Technica points out that this by itself is not a huge concern because all online systems go down from time to time, but apparently, the fact that the PS3 units couldn’t establish an online presence was the least of their concerns.

Affected PS3 owners soon found out that they were also unable to play some offline games, such as Heavy Rain.

The Playstation Blog reports that they are, indeed, aware of the glitch, and technicians are hard at work on it. While there are no official reports of what exactly is causing this, speculation across many forums and sources are suggesting that the glitch is grounded on the PS3′s date and time system, with some users noting that the date on their units have been reset back to December 31, 1999.

The only confirmation that Sony has officially given out is that the glitch seems to only affect the non-slim versions of the PS3, safely exonerating the newer slim models.
