Poland president, wife, dead in plane crash; no survivors

Polish President Lech Kaczynski is feared to have been killed with his wife in a plane crash in the Russian region of Smolensk, according to local news reports. Kaczynski was 60.

There were no survivors, according to the local governor.

The plane, which was carrying 132 people, caught fire as it was approaching the airport in Smolensk, probably from hitting some trees at the end of the runway. The plane had attempted to land in very heavy fog, which obviously impaired pilots’ vision.

“It caught fire, the fire has now been extinguished, but the extent of the damage is such that it’s unlikely anybody on board survived,” according to Piotr Paszkowsk, a spokesman for the Poland’s Foreign Ministry in a report by CNN.

The crash occurred at around 2:50 a.m. EST (10:50 a.m. local) on Saturday, according to a statement by the Investigation Committee of the Russian prosecutor’s office. The plane crashed into the town of Pechorsk in the Smolensk region of Russia.

Kaczynski was elected as Poland’s president in 2005.
