Former Raiders QB JaMarcus Russell arrested for codeine syrup

JaMarcus Russell, an NFL free agent QB, was busted on Monday for possession of a controlled substance called codeine syrup.

The Mobile County police in Alabama reported that they were doing an undercover investigation that led to the arrest of Russell.

Lori Myles, spokesperson of the Sheriff’s office, said Russell was arrested at his home and was taken to the Mobile Metro jail at around 4:22 in the afternoon. The player made a $2,500 bail and was released some time later.

Codeine syrup is a prescription painkiller. It is also referred to as lean, purple drank or sizzurp. It contains promethazine and codeine. Abusing it would make a person weak, drowsy and feel like he’s in an “altered level of consciousness.”

Russell will appear in court on July 20.
