The works of Raphael and Rembrandt have set record-breaking sales after being sold for a total of almost 50 million pounds (82 million USD) at a London auction on Tuesday.
Raphael’s drawing called “Head of a Muse” was bought by a telephone bidder who wanted to keep his identity a secret. It cost 29.2 million pounds (47.5 million USD). This is the highest amount ever spent on a work on paper anywhere in the world.
Head of Christie’s auction’s Old Master and 19th-Century Drawings Benjamin Peronnet said, “It offers us a glimpse into the working mind of a genius; it presents us with the immediacy of his thoughts and ideas, capturing the precise moment at which the artist’s hand and mind were applied to paper.”
On the other hand, Rembrandt’s “Portrait of a Man, Half-Length, with his Arms Akimbo” sold for 20 million pounds (32.7 million USD). It was last seen at Columbia University’s president’s office 40 years ago.
