Rare Darwin book found in toilet

A first edition copy of the book “On the Origin of Species” by Charles Darwin was found on a bookcase in a guest lavatory in Southern England and is to be sold at an auction house in London.

Around 1,250 copies of the book’s first edition was printed in 1859. One of the copies was already bought for £35,000 at an auction in Norfolk in April.

Christie’s auction house said the rare Charles Darwin book had been on a toilet bookshelf at a home in Oxford for years.

The book, with the complete title “On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection,” still has the original publisher’s gilt-decorated spine and green cloth cover.

It is expected to sell for $99,000 or £60,000, according to Christie’s. They will begin the auction on Tuesday, in celebration of the 150th year of the publication of this famous Darwin work.

This year also marks the 200th birthday of the British scientist and father of evolution.
