U.S. rebuff takeover allegations

P.J. Crowley, a spokesperson for the US State Department   speaking to reporters denied suggestions that the US military needs were taking preference over the needs of earthquake survivors.  He said that ” the democratically elected of Haiti is in charge.  He added that “this is an international effort, the US is not in charge here, the government of Haiti is in charge, the UN is in charge- we are supporting them.”

His remarks came after criticism from foreign governments and other international aid group that the US  is more concern about their military needs than the humanitarian matter after taking over operations at Haiti’s international airport.

On Sunday Venezuelan and Nicaraguan governments expressed concern about the US military deployment. Venezuelan president Hugo Chavez  said on his weekly television show that “It appears that the United States is occupying Haiti militarily , taking advantage of the tragedy.”

It is expected that more than 10,000 troops will be deployed to Haiti by Monday.  The US military Southern Command stated on Sunday that some 1,000 US troops had been put on the ground in Haiti, with another 4,000 stationed afloat. And another 7,500 troops to arrive by Monday.
