Republican Scott Brown wins Massachusetts Senate race

Scott Brown, a Republican, pulled a major upset win on Tuesday in a special election for the U.S. Senate seat left by Democrat Ted Kennedy.

Ted Kennedy died of brain cancer in August.

According to the National Election Pool, a group composed of several media organizations such as CNN, 52 percent of the counted results was in favor of Brown, while 47 percent went to the Democratic candidate, Massachusetts Attorney General Martha Coakley. Joseph Kennedy, an independent who is not related to the Kennedy political clan, got 1 percent.

Coakley said in her concession speech, “I am heartbroken at the result. Although I am very disappointed, I always respect the voters’ choice.”

Since 1972, no Republican has been victorious in the U.S. Senate elections in the state of Massachusetts until now. It has been the Democrats who have control over the governorship, the state’s legislature and whole congressional delegation.

The good people of Massachusetts told pollster after pollster that they wanted to send a message to Washington. My! My! That message has been received loud and clear:

    "WE'RE NOT PAYING ATTENTION!"

    Congratulations, Massachusetts!
