Survivor winner Richard Hatch emerged from an interview with Matt Lauer on NBC’s Today Show, only to be snatched up by feds and thrown back into jail shortly after.
Hatch, who won US$1 million in CBS‘ reality show Survivor when it first came out in 2000, was imprisoned under charges of tax evasion, and has been living under house arrest in his sister’s Newport, Rhode Island home. He was arrested by police authorities in the same house just hours after his talk with Lauer.
According to a spokeswoman for the Federal Bureau of Prisons, there are numerous reasons why an individual under house arrest would be put back in jail. Details on exactly why Hatch was imprisoned again are still unclear at the moment.
Hatch, on his interview on the Today Show, insisted that the events that led to his initial imprisonment were driven by anti-gay bias.
“I know without question that there are personal issues involved for the prosecutor. I don’t know why. The prosecutorial misconduct has been egregious,” Hatch told Lauer. Hatch contends that aside from the fact that CBS agreed to pay for taxes on his US$1 million winnings, Hatch didn’t have an IRS bill for 2000.
Hatch was scheduled to be released from house arrest on October 7.
