California State Senator Roy Ashburn was arrested early morning on Wednesday after an officer noticed that the vehicle he was driving was swerving. It gets even worse.
Apparently, Ashburn was arrested for driving drunk after having come from Faces, a gay nightclub in midtown Sacramento at around 2:00 am in the morning. Ashburn was also reported to have a male passenger aboard with him in his Chevy Tahoe.
Now, let’s put aside the fact that Ashburn’s married with four kids aside for a moment; this setup keeps getting weirder and weirder because Senator Ashburn has a history of opposing gay rights. Ashburn is a Republican Senator representing parts of Kern, Tulare and San Bernardino counties as well.
“I am deeply sorry for my actions and offer no excuse for my poor judgment,” Ashburn said in an official statement. “I accept complete responsibility for my conduct and am prepared to accept the consequences for what I did. I am also truly sorry for the impact this incident will have on those who support and trust me – my family, my constituents, my friends, and my colleagues in the Senate.”
Ashburn was released on a $1,400 bond, having been charged with DUI and having a blood alcohol level greater than .08%.
