Russian mine blasts kill 12, trap 83

Two explosions in Russia’s biggest underground coal mine on Sunday left at least a dozen people dead and 83 more trapped.

Rescue workers are doing their best to help those that are still inside the mine and also those that got injured.

The first mine blast, which is believed to have been caused by methane, happened on Sunday and rescuers went underground to save those who were inside. But, a second and more powerful explosion occurred, preventing more help from going into the coal mine.

Emergency Ministry spokesman Valery Korchagin said they tried to send in a rescue team early Monday to pull out five trapped miners. “It was not clear, however, whether the miners were still alive,” he said.

The second blast completely destroyed the above-ground structures of the coal mine, as well as the main air shaft.

Prime Minister Vladimir Putin said, “It’s clear the situation is difficult. We could even say very difficult, tragic. Dozens of people remain in the mine. … Their fate is unknown. And the saddest thing is that additional rescuers cannot be sent into the mine right away.”
