Russian leader wounded in assassination attempt

Yunus-Bek Yevkurov, president the southern Russian republic of Ingushestia, has been wounded in an assassination attempt. Three of his bodyguards having been killed, and injuring three others including the president’s brother, reports say.

The assassination was carried out in the city of Nazran, where Yevkurov’s convoy was caught in an explosion. A car that was parked on the side of the road suddenly exploded just as Yevkurov’s car was passing by. No group has claimed the attempt to be their own.

“A car bomb was set off at about 0820 (0420 GMT) when a motorcade of the Ingush president was going by the highway,” said an interior ministry officer.

Yevkurov is currently recuperating in a Russian hospital, and no reports have been given yet as to his current condition.

Violence in Nazran has reached a high as three assassination attempts were carried out recently: Ingushetia’s deputy chief supreme court justice on June 10, and the region’s former vice prime minister on June 13.
