Kodansha USA Publishing revealed that the highly popular manga series Sailor Moon is expected to make a comeback in the United States.
Starting September 2011, the publishing company will release the acclaimed series in its Kodansha Comics. After being out of print for six years, the Sailor Moon series will be re-launched together with its two-volume prequel Codename: Sailor V, which will be printed in the United States for the first time.
Originating in Japan in 1992 and in the United States five years later, Sailor Moon tells the story of Usagi Tsukino, a young girl who becomes the super heroine Sailor Moon to battle evil and fight for love and justice on behalf of the Moon and the mysterious Moon Princess. The series’ first successful release in the United States helped change the face of book publishing and laid the foundation for the manga craze. Codename: Sailor V follows Minako Aino as she fights the villains of the Dark Agency before discovering Sailor Moon.
Kodansha USA Publishing plans to release Sailor Moon twice a month and will adopt the 2003 Japanese re-release format of the classic series. The original 18 volumes have been compressed to 12 volumes to include the main storyline as well as two volumes focusing on the short stories. Each volume will include new cover arts, reworked interior art and dialogue along with comprehensive bonus materials from Takeuchi.
Sailor Moon was one of the most popular manga and anime properties in the world and took the United States by storm. The series sold more than 15 million copies in Japan and spurred animated series, live action musicals, television series, and countless merchandise.
