Authorities were called upon by the mother herself, Carlotta Pierce, 30, to her filthy Brooklyn apartment 1 ½ hours after Marchella Pierce, 4, was found unresponsive.
Marchella was 15 lbs. She was on her mother’s bed and had bruises that were consistent with trauma.
In her mother’s bedroom was a small bed for Marchella who had been born with underdeveloped lungs and breathed through a trachea tube connected to an oxygen tank. Marchella’s bed had rails at its head and foot and attached were two twines that were used to tie her.
Carlotta said Marchella was fine at 4 a.m. but at 6 she was unresponsive.
Two complaints involving Carlotta’s parenting came up. One was she had marijuana in her system when Marchella was born prematurely. The second case remains open, and no details were available.
Carlotta has two other sons: 5 years old and 9 months old who are healthy. They were in the apartment together with Carlotta’s mother when the police arrived. She was also questioned.
No charges were filed against Carlotta. Marchella’s death cannot still be ruled out as either parental abuse of starving a child or death because of a medical condition.
Autopsy would be on Friday.
