Social Networks: Twitter has 50 million messages a day!

Don’t bother reaching for that calculator – that amounts to about 579 tweets a second.

Of course, while that may seem quite admirable to some, that’s still a long way from how other social networking services fare. Techtree reports that YouTube alone accounts for a billion video views a day, and Facebook is proud to be able to say that 8 billion total minutes every day is spent on the site, with about a billion messages sent through its online messenger equivalent, Facebook Chat.

But, considering that Twitter serviced around 5,000 tweets a day in 2007 when it was first launched, growing quickly to 300,000 a day by 2008, the fact that Twitter was sifting through 50 million of these 140-character messages each day showcases a healthy growth for the service. With a slew of new features that were introduced recently on Twitter, this number may actually rise even further.

If you use Twitter, we’d love to hear how much you use it on our comments below, especially if you have some uncommon uses for it. Don’t forget to add us up in Twitter as well!
