A group of doctors from Spain claims to have performed the world’s first ever full-face transplant on a Spanish man who accidentally shot himself in the face about five years ago.
The surgeons, who are from the Vall d’Hebron University Hospital in Barcelona, said they gave the man a new set of teeth, cheekbones, lips, eyelids, muscles and nose. The surgery lasted for 24 hours.
Dr. Joan Pere Barrett, head of the medical team, told reporters, “The patient asked to see himself one week after the surgery, and he reacted very calmly and with satisfaction, and when we asked him — in writing, because we communicate with writing and gestures — he said he was very grateful and satisfied.”
The 30-year-old patient can’t eat, smile or speak yet. The surgeon said he will be able to breathe and eat normally after about 7 days.
So far, 10 partial face transplants have been conducted all over the world, including countries like China and the United States.
