US President Barack Obama delivered his first State of the Union address Wednesday, a year after his election, in Washington D.C..
His speech focused on several issues including the economic crisis, health care reform, unemployment and domestic politics.
The president apologized for the disappointments his first year at the White House has brought about. He said that his administration began “in the middle of two wars, the economy suffering from acute recession, the financial system on the verge of collapse and a government deeply in debt.”
He also talked about international politics, saying that the threat of nuclear weapons is the “greatest danger to the American people.” According to him, the US and Russia are “finalizing the negotiations for a treaty on arms control, the magnitude of which is the largest of the last 20 years.”
He mentioned that in April, 44 nations will gather in Washington for the Summit on Nuclear Safety with the objective: to ensure vulnerable nuclear materials from falling into the hands of terrorists.
Obama’s State of the Union address, which has earned varied reactions from different groups and organizations, lasted for 71 minutes and is among the longest in the last 45 years.
