A 6.0 magnitude earthquake hit eastern Turkey on Monday, leaving at least 41 people dead and several houses damaged.
Kovancilar town mayor Bekir Yanilmaz said most of the victims were from Kayali, Yukari Kanatli and Okcular, the three villages that experienced the most destruction.
According to the government crisis center, about 60 people were injured due to the quake that happened early in the morning, 4:32 am local time. The earthquake’s center was close to the village of Basyurt in the province of Elazig.
Muammer Erol, premier of Elazig, said, “Villages consisting mainly of mud-brick houses have been damaged, but we have minimal damage such as cracks in buildings made of cement or stone.”
Istanbul’s Kandili Observatory seismology center reported that over 20 aftershocks were felt right after the quake.
