One whole day after the 8.8-magnitude earthquake that rocked the nation, the Chilean populace are still wary of even more aftershocks as residual quakes seemed to still endanger the area.
The earthquake that struck just before dawn on Saturday was considered to be one of the strongest earthquakes to hit the world in decades, clocking in with approximately 800 times the energy unleashed by the destructive earthquake that plagued Haiti some months back. Since the first quake, Chile had been rocked by at least 90 other aftershocks, all with ranging magnitudes of 4.9 to 6.9, all significantly destructive.
Sunday morning greeted locals with a shortage of resources such as food, clean water and gasoline, and an increased alertness to the possibility of looters. Local police have resorted to using tear gas and water cannons to subdue and avert looters.
“They are robbing everything,” said Jacqueline Van Rysselberghe, the mayor of Concepcion.
